About Russell's Blueberry Farm & Nursery

If you live in mid-Michigan, Russell's Blueberry Farm and Nursery is the best place to get fresh, delicious blueberries.  On our 40 acre farm, located about 8 miles west of Saginaw, near Hemlock, we have over 25,000 blueberry plants from 10 different varietals.  This large variety means we have a longer growing season than most other farms (from July 4th through Labor Day, and often longer) and we also have the right type of berry for you, depending on whether you're planning on making a pie, jam, muffins, or just eating the berries plain!  We also have a 10-acre pond, picnic tables, and refreshments for sale - so bring a picnic lunch and make a family day of it!

Blueberry Nutrition Facts and Recipes

Blueberries - delicious and nutritious - are truly of one nature's miracle foods.  Blueberries are high in antioxidants and other compounds that help prevent heart disease and cancer, help brain and memory functions, and slow the effects of aging.

Antioxidants are proven to fight effectively against certain types of cancer, and when it comes to fruits containing antioxidants, blueberries are the "leader of the pack" according to Ron Prior of Tufts University Human Nutrition Research Center. In studies done at Tufts University, the blueberry consistently outscored other fruits and vegetables in antioxidant activity.  The type of antioxidants found in blueberries have a different chemical structure compared with other common antioxidants such as Vitamin C that makes them three to four times more potent, Prior said.

For helping memory and fighting the effects of aging, it was also noted in a recent Time magazine article that "When fed blueberry extract for nine weeks, elderly rats outperformed a control group at such tasks as navigating mazes and balancing on rotating logs.  And when aging rats ate a blueberry-enriched diet for for four months, they performed as well in memory tests as younger rats."

Groups

Russell's Blueberry Farm is a great place to bring groups of children for a fun and healthy field trip. Our group tours include a short tour of the the farm and a talk about the history and biology of blueberries.  After the tour and talk, children can pick their own pint of blueberries to take home or back to school.  Children also will receive an informative and fun coloring book that talks about berries and their history.

The average length of the field trip, including the tour and the blueberry picking is around one hour, though this can be compressed or expanded to fit your needs and schedule. The cost per child, including the tour, a pint of blueberries, and the coloring book, is only $5.

Over the years, we have hosted hundreds of successful fieldtrips from a variety of organizations, including schools, day care centers, foster care facilities, nursing homes, and summer camps.  Call Emily Russell at (989) 781-2859 or e-mail her at emily@therussellcorp.com for more details or to schedule your group visit.
